Former Charter School Leader Indicted

BISHOPVILLE, S.C.  (SCRN/AP/WVOC) - The former director of a Midlands charter school is now facing federal indictment over her alleged misuse of grants for the Lee County school. 

The South Carolina Radio Network reports it was two years ago the Mary L. Dinkins Higher Learning Academy in Bishopville was ordered shut down. 

The South Carolina Public Charter School District's board cut off funding and recommended investigations.

Despite the fact that the state revoked the Dinkins school's charter and ordered it closed in early 2013, the school continued to operate.

Now the former director of the school is facing federal indictment. 

Benita Dinkins-Robinson is charged with two counts of theft of government property. 

She's accused of converting grants from the federal agriculture and education departments for her own use.

The exact dollar amount has not been made public.
