Haley Proclaims MLK Jr. Day of Service

Governor Nikki Haley has issued a statewide proclamation designating Monday as Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Haley is encouraging South Carolinians to celebrate King's life by volunteering and participating in community service projects.

In 1994, Congress designated the third Monday in January as the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and in the years since, millions of Americans have used today for mentoring at-risk youth; visiting with hospice patients; conducting food, clothing or book drives; building or repair homes in their communities and other activities.

By Executive Order, the United Way Association of South Carolina serves as the administrative agency for the South Carolina Commission on National and Community Service.

Those looking for specific opportunities to serve can check www.mlkday.gov or http://getconnected.uwasc.org.
