Haley Says Ice Storm Devastation Like Hurricane

AIKEN, S.C.  (AP/WVOC) - Governor Nikki Haley says this week's ice and snow storm has devastated parts of South Carolina worse than a hurricane.

The governor says her driving tour of downtown Aiken today made her understand why the storm left 350,000 people without power at the peak.

Utility crews are making progress as they work to restore power to those who had power outages over the past few days.

But utility company officials have warned that it could be Sunday or even later next week before all power is restored.

The most serious problems have been reported in Aiken and Dorchester counties, but power customers in Orangeburg, Sumter, Barnwell and Bamberg counties also took a significant hit.

The Highway Patrol says troopers have responded to about 5,000 calls since the stormy weather began on Tuesday.

That includes more than 1,500 wrecks and more 1,200 reports of trees on roadways.
