Kershaw County authorities have arrested a 24-year-old man on charges of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.
Sheriff Jim Matthews says Grant Helms Jr. is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
The sheriff says during an investigation into an alleged incident earlier this year, officers learned of a second assault against the same girl within a 24-hour period.
“This kind of thing goes on more frequently than is reported – not just in Kershaw County, but everywhere,” Matthews says. “Sometimes the mother or somebody doesn't want there to be a revelation about it or any number of reasons.
“That's very unfortunate because these little kids – girls and boys – have to live with this for the rest of their lives. And frequently, those who offend as adults were abused when they were children.”
Helms is from the town of Kershaw in Lancaster County.
The sheriff says the sexual assaults occurred just across the county line in Kershaw County.
