Man Gets Life without Parole in Cop Killing

AIKEN,S.C. (SCRN/WVOC) - A North Augusta man will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to murdering an Aiken Public Safety officer.

28-year-old Joshua Jones was sentenced to life without parole for the shooting death of Corporal Sandra Rogers in 2012.

Jones pled "guilty but mentally ill" to murder and other charges, the Aiken Standard reports.

The plea came after a psychologist diagnosed him with schizophrenia as the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head about six months before he killed the officer.

He will be sentenced to a maximum security prison with a mental health facility.
Investigators say Jones shot his pregnant girlfriend, then later killed Rogers as she stopped his car in Aiken.
