Mayor’s bond reform panel releases first draft

A city panel on violent crime and bond reform Tuesday released a draft of what will become its recommendations for changes to the criminal justice system.

The State newspaper, reports that among those recommendations will be the suggestion that city police provide more information to judges during bond hearings, and that an officer be present during all bond hearings on serious crimes.

Other recommendations will include support to bills pending in the legislature that strengthen the state’s bond laws. The panel also will propose legislation.

Among the legislative ideas is requiring judges to consider gang affiliation when setting a defendant’s bond.

The panel is scheduled to meet again Nov. 18 to present its final report.
