Victim Identified in Apartment Fire

An autopsy shows a man whose body was found during a fire at a West Columbia apartment complex Thursday night died from smoke inhalation.

The Lexington County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as 65-year-old Jay Gross.

His body was found in one of the units at Granby Oaks Apartments on State Street near the Parkland Plaza, where a fire that started around 8 p.m. destroyed eight of the units in one building.

Authorities say at least one dozen people were displaced, and the Red Cross is providing temporary lodging at a nearby hotel, plus financial assistance to purchase food, clothing and other emergency items.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
