Poll: Columbia voters think Five Points is unsafe at night

A new poll from a Columbia-based political polling firm says a majority of registered voters in the city don't believe Five Points is safe at night.

The poll from Cranston Research says 65 percent of respondents believe Five Points to be unsafe during the evening hours.

Columbia's entertainment district has been in the news recently with the shooting of an 18-year-old University of South Carolina student who was paralyzed in the incident.

Seventy-five percent of respondents also believe Columbia has a gang problem, and 42 percent think city officials aren't doing enough to keep Columbia safe.

However, the respondents give a vote of confidence to the Columbia Police Department, with 55 percent saying they believe police are doing an "excellent" or "good" job keeping the streets safe.
