Road Race to Benefit Martha Childress Recovery

A road race will be held to benefit the University of South Carolina student paralyzed by a stray bullet fired in Columbia's Five Points entertainment district.

18-year-old Martha Childress was an innocent bystander waiting for a taxi last month when she was wounded.

She's now in Atlanta undergoing physical rehab at a clinic specializing in spinal injuries.

Childress is a graduate of J.L. Mann High School in Greenville, and the community there has quickly organized the First Annual 5K 'Martha-thon' for the afternoon of November 27th, the day before Thanksgiving.

The 3.1-mile run and walk will be held at the MESA Soccer Complex in Greer.

The proceeds will go to the Martha Childress Trust Fund to pay medical expenses and help Childress and her family adjust to her condition.
