Voting Rights Stressed at MLK Day Rally

North Carolina NAACP President William Barber says what conservative leaders have done to social justice in South Carolina and North Carolina has been “mighty low,” as he puts it, but he thinks people in both states are ready to go to higher ground.

Barber spoke Monday at the annual King Day at the Dome rally at the South Carolina Statehouse in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

We will meet every challenge to suppress the right to vote.  We will mobilize strategically every person to get educated on the issues and get to the polls,” Barber said.

We will make every effort to fight in the courts and to fight against anything that undermines protection.  And we will move every obstacle attempting to keep citizens from voting because we are striving for higher ground.”

Barber and others also emphasized themes like more money for education and Medicare.

And there were renewed calls to remove the Confederate flag from the Statehouse grounds.
